FIAMR2010 #118 FIA GROUP SCHEME – The Importance of having Nominated Beneficiaries on the FIA GROUP POLICY Records and Maintaining them as Current.
We have this year alone had several death claims where the FIA have no Member record of nominated beneficiaries. This poses a potential problem for the family of the Deceased.
Why should you appoint a beneficiary on your FIA Group policy?
- Appointing a beneficiary in respect of the death benefit is an important part of estate planning. If you have a beneficiary on your policy, it will ensure that your money is paid quickly and directly to the person you have appointed.
- To ensure that payment is made to the beneficiary, it is important that the “Appointment of beneficiary/nominee” form must be in the FIA’s possession before the death of the life assured.
- Should a death claim be admitted and there is no beneficiary on the policy, the proceeds have to be paid to your estate. This money forms part of the estate on which executor’s and administration fees are charged. In terms of your will the proceeds are then passed on by inheritance.
- If there is a beneficiary on the policy, the money will be paid to him/her directly as soon as the claim has been admitted. No fees are payable then.
Please take this as an opportunity of confirming/re-stating your beneficiaries on your FIA Group Policy. Please complete the attached form for this purpose and get it signed and returned to the FIA to update their records. It may be sent to the following persons for this purpose:

The FSB has announced a revised set of charges for various administrative functions as from 1 May in Board Notices 53 (Long Term) and 54 (Short Term). While the charges are generally applicable to insurers rather than intermediaries, short term brokers should take note of the new fee of R689,00 applicable to applications for approval to render services in relation to a short term policy under Section 8(2)(d) of the Short Term Insurance Act of 1998. Travel Insurance is not a major portion of an intermediary’s portfolio, but with the increased personal travel over the past 20 years, many FIA members may be involved in attending to this for their clients. With the inferior product offering, it is the intermediary who is running the risk of PI and FAIS claims should these short-comings not be pointed out to clients. Notwithstanding many clients purchasing their travel insurance from the travel agent, this is again an area where the FIA and members can evidence the benefit of an Intermediary Service vs Direct or ‘tick-the-box’ Agents.
